Marin's 21st Century Dance & Music Collaboration 2002, taking place September 27-29, 2002 at the Marin Civic Center Showcase Theater, will showcase and in some cases premiere original works of 10 professional choreographers in collaboration with their composers. The performance will represent a range of contemporary styles and encompass a broad field of inspirational subjects, featuring over 75 performers of all ages. These performance works incorporate video/slide visuals, ornate costuming and props, spoken word, and live musicians. The following artists were selected from a call for entries to participate:
Highlights of this year's diverse program......Celebrated soloist Charlotte Moraga, a principal dancer with the Chitresh Das Dance Company, will collaborate with Chitresh Das who has composed music for tabla and sarod to illustrate the art and rhythms of kathak......Danny Nguyen, who escaped from Saigon, Vietnam in 1982 with 47 other "boat people," and went on to graduate with a BFA from California Institute of the Arts and an MFA from Mills College, and who claims his modern choreography brings with it a unique twist of Vietnamese culture and experience, will bring his company of dancers and musicians to perform in Marin... ...Joe Landini of Landini Dance Company is guest choreographer for Big Moves, a community educational outreach organization that opens up the world of dance to people of all sizes; together they explore the thoughts and challenges of dance and size-acceptance in 'They'll eat the fat ones first...' ...Mills graduate Erika Tingey of High Release Dance in San Jose will collaborate with San Francisco Taiko Dojo musicians Chris Coen, Sharon Gong and Yuki Takaishi to bring you the intense excitement of dance and drumming... ...Ballerina and Wells Scholar Erica Rose Jeffrey will combine her interests in dance and in her conflict resolution education program through dance, Movement Toward Peace, in a collaboration with composer Alexander DeVaron, who has for many years combined his study of music with the study of Buddhism and meditation... ...Janie Miklaunus collaborates with composers Scott Railsback (didgeridoo) and Ray Regan (multi-instrumentalist) to bring to life four aboriginal myths: Birthplace of the Moon, Garden of the Sun Goddess, Darambal of the Dreamtime and Creation of the Jenolan Caves, all inspired by the artwork and writings of Ainslie Roberts.
