SUMMARY: Marin's 21st Century Dance Collaboration, taking place October 2-3, 1999 at the Marin Civic Center Showcase Theater, will showcase (and in most cases premiere) original new works of 12 professional bay area choreographers in collaboration with their composers. The performance will represent a range of contemporary styles and encompass a broad field of inspirational subjects, featuring over 100 performers of all ages. These performance works incorporate video/slide visuals, ornate costuming and props, spoken word, and live musicians. The following artists were selected from a call for entries to participate:
...Award winning choreographer Thais Mazur and her company will tell the stories of three women who have experienced major life events as a result of war, told through monologues and contemporary movement, inspired by the book "The Suitcase," which features letters and poems written by refugees from Bosnia, Croatia and Palestine...
...Stacey Printz, Dance Director at The Branson School and Printz Dance Project will present a study of the manipulation of time in "The Dance Quartet," a modular modern string quartet performed live using amplified string instruments, composed by Bruce Munson, Director of Instrumental Music at Bransons...
...The Foundry will present a trio featuring video/slide presentation and choreography reflecting the pull of Derek Powell's virtuostic classical guitar against the undercurrent of a pre-recorded soundscape...
...Sherry Brier will present 30 bellydancers using swords, veils, double veils and tambourines moving to an original composition in the gypsy style, by Doug Adams of Light Rain...
...Georgia Ortega, awarded a MAC individual artist grant in 1993 and again this year, will present a modern ballet in collaboration with composer John Wubbenhorst of Facing East Productions, who composes music featuring bansuri, flute, sarod, violin, guitar, keyboards, bass, tabla and other percussion instruments...
Producers: "Marin's 21st Century Dance Collaboration" is funded in part by the Marin Arts Council and produced by Hilary Kretchmer and Lorien Fenton, directors of Zero Gravity Dance Theater, Inc. and Dance Outre, Inc., respectively, two non-profit organizations. Both Hilary and Lorien have a long history of producing dance and encouraging interdisciplinary and collaborative artistic endeavors in Marin County and beyond. Hilary Kretchmer was the co-producer of both Marin County Festival of Dance performances (1995 and 1997). Lorien Fenton's company, Dance Outre, gave performances in the Bay Area throughout the late 80's and early 90's and toured the western United States 3 times. Hilary and Lorien are co-editors of cre8tivez.com, an online arts magazine showcasing local and international artists.
